The anthurium has a characteristic upturned leaf, the spathe, of very bright color, from which emerges the spadix, a sort of elongated spike with hermaphrodite flowers. There are at least 500 different species of this plant, with different colors and shapes. As it grows in tropical regions, Anthurium should be grown in habitats with a similar climate i.e. humid and hot.
In summer, it should be watered abundantly, so that the soil always remains moist. For this, you can put expanded clay in the saucer, so that the roots are not in direct contact with the water, but always have water available.

Anthurium: the flower
Anthurium belongs to the Araceae family and is native to Colombia. Its name comes from the Greek anthos (flower) and oura (tail), in reference to its particular shape. This plant resembles a heart, with a tip, the spathe, and an elongated inflorescence called a spadix. There are 200 different species of Anthurium, the best known of which are Anthurium andreanum, Anthurium scherzerianum and Anthurium crystallinum.
The first two plants have broad leaves that range in color from red and orange to white and pink. Anthurium crystallinum has an emerald green flower with beautiful silvery white stripes.
If cultivated well, this plant can flower all year round. The best time of year is summer and the flowers last for two months. They need to be supported because the stems are heavy and tend to bend.

For this beautiful plant to last, the temperature should never drop below 15 ° in winter. Therefore, since it is often even colder, it is best to keep it indoors. Temperature fluctuations can be very dangerous. All Anthuriums are grown in a greenhouse or container and are intended for indoor use. They prefer places away from drafts, bright but not in direct contact with the sun. The soil in which they grow should consist of garden soil, sand and peat.
Anthurium should be watered abundantly, and the soil should always be moist. Expanded clay can be useful if placed in the saucer. Before it blooms, it should also be watered twice a day in summer. From spring to September, it must be fertilized every two weeks with a natural fertilizer. It should not be pruned, but the dry leaves should be removed.

Anthurium is sensitive to changes in air and temperature. It should be placed away from heat sources and from doors and windows. In winter, it is best to keep it indoors, since the temperature should not drop below 10 °; in summer, it should never exceed 20 °.
Its leaves may be stained. This is due to the fact that they are affected by mealybugs. In this case, effective pest control can be carried out. Natural methods can also be used to remove aphids from plants. In the case of mealybugs, a detergent consisting of 20 grams of Marseille soap and a liter of water can be made at home.
