A reinvented interior and a glass roof to let in the light © Sylvain Mestre
This dark and old-fashioned apartment has been transformed with the creation of a huge glass roof. The opening thus made in the roof, and the space recovered from the attic, have made it possible to create comfortable family accommodation, bathed in a bright atmosphere.
Located on the top floor of an old building and facing north, this apartment was dark and cold. However, the architects immediately saw its potential and succeeded in transform it into a bright and warm family cocoon. “When we visited it with the new owners, there was a trap door in the false ceiling that led to the attic. This meant that we could directly access the attic, exploit double height and especially bring back light by creating openings in the roof“ explain Pauline Suhr and Claire Meunier, from the Ré Architecture agency. But if the project seemed obvious, bringing it to life was a real challenge. Long months of discussions with the architects of the Buildings of France were indeed necessary to obtain the authorization to modify the roof. “The apartment overlooks the quays, a stone’s throw from Vieux Lyon, a very well-preserved area” specify the architects. “They finally allowed us to create a wide opening with a large canopy rather than several small ones, such as Velux®. This required on our part a lot of drawing and cutting work to be able to light the two bedrooms upstairs and the living room below, but this is also what makes the project atypical and gives it character “. The apartment has been completely reinvented. The architects have cleared the way to be able to start from scratch and develop suitable living spaces the daily life of the owners, but also the constraints imposed by the building. Explanations.
