Potholders are needed in every kitchen, therefore, you can make them not only for yourself, but also as a gift to your family and friends. In this article, we tried to find as many interesting options as possible.
There are also the simplest examples in execution that even a schoolchild can do, but there are also more complex models that can only be taken by those who have at least basic sewing or knitting skills. For example, do-it-yourself patchwork potholders are quite difficult to perform, require patience and accuracy in work.
Well, then let’s get down to business!
Cloth potholders
To begin with, we will give you some preliminary recommendations that relate to the process itself. They will come in handy in any case, which pattern you would not choose.
So what should you remember when starting to make this kitchenware?
- 1 The fabric should be chosen one that does not crumble and is easily creased. Cotton base or linen is the best option.
- 2 Do not use flammable fabrics: synthetics, satin. Still, sometimes you have to take dishes from an open fire and you can accidentally touch it. Cotton will not immediately grab, but synthetic fabrics will instantly catch fire.
- 3 Be sure to make some kind of interlayer between the two layers of fabric, since otherwise they will only perform a decorative function, and hot will not work with them.
- 4 Before opening, be sure to prepare the selected flaps: wash and iron. If you don’t do this, then after the product is ready and you wash it, it may just sit down.
- five Check if the fabric is shedding. To do this, soak the flap in hot water. If the water stains, then do not use this material, no matter how beautiful it is. This is all the more important when you sew an oven mitt from several types of fabric. After all, it is so offensive to wash once and then throw out the thing that has lost its appearance.
- 6 Do not forget to make a loop for easy storage of potholders.
- 7 When making a pattern, be sure to leave 1 cm around the edges for the hem.
Here, in general, are all the rules that you need to remember. Do-it-yourself potholders are not sewing a coat, after all!
Potholder “Mitten”
This is the most standard option and never goes out of style. The potholder in the form of a mitten not only looks cute, but also very practical.
Burning your hands in it is almost impossible. You can make the pattern yourself, based on your own hand.
Circle it on paper, and then step back 5-6 cm from the edges of the drawing and form a rounded outline. If you don’t want to, then you can use our ready-made solution.
We present you an option with a pattern, which, in our opinion, looks very dignified, and it is not at all difficult to sew it.
For manufacturing you need:
- the cloth
- Some kind of sealant, such as a synthetic winterizer
- Non-woven adhesive
- Metal rings for decoration
Step 1. Then make a pattern, which is shown in the figure below. What size it is is clearly visible on the side of the ruler.
Step 2. Place it on the fabric and cut 4 pieces for each mitt, 8 pieces in total: one straight and the other mirrored. Then cut a non-woven lining for each piece, 4 pieces in total.
Step 3. Now you need to cut strips for the edging and loops for each mitten. Their size:
- Edging – 7.5cm by 32.5cm
- Loops – 10cm by 4cm
Step 4. Cut out the same elements from the non-woven fabric. Glue the edging. Assemble the parts as shown in the picture and quilt.
Step 5. Then sew them, turn them out. Sew on the piping and curly buttonhole. You can sweep the details, or you can pin them with pins before sewing.
Now you’re done! Not difficult, right?
Pot holder “Butterfly”
This is a very convenient potholder, which is no worse than gloves in practicality. But her appearance is not so standard, but very interesting.

And in the hand it is taken in the same way as in the picture. Many hostesses who have sewed such such potholders with their own hands note that after them they do not want to use a standard mitten at all, since this option is much more practical and it is easier to grab a hot piece of dishes.
Here is her pattern. In the same way as in the case of a mitten, count the number of parts.
Potholder “Mouse”
In the kitchen of any self-respecting mistress, mice are unacceptable! But not these cuties, in the form of potholders.
And here is their simple pattern. You don’t need a lot of details here, only 2 for each and a lining. You can choose absolutely any colors, the main thing is that they are combined with each other.
Patchwork style potholders
For such potholders you need to have patience and skills. But the result is simply stunning! It is necessary to cut parts into such products strictly along the shared thread, otherwise the product will then be deformed.
First, we cut the flaps into strips or squares, then we sew them together, then we sew them to the base from a single piece of fabric.
And then we sew this blank with the seamy part of the pattern, not forgetting to put a synthetic winterizer.

Potholders from old jeans
A very interesting option. And they are easier to sew than others because even a synthetic winterizer is not always needed. Denim folded in two layers by itself is very dense and will not let any heat through. The picture below shows the most elementary and convenient model:
You just need to cut out the pockets with allowances, sew them together and stitch them to the same shape on the wrong side of the fabric.
In addition to this option, you can make a very simple potholder out of jeans, to create which you don’t even need a sewing machine.
To do this, you just need to cut 3-4 squares and pull the threads along their edges, forming a fringe.
Then just sew the parts together with a regular seam using a bright and thick thread.
That’s all! Simple, fast and no heat is terrible in the hands.
Felt potholders
Felt is good because it does not crumble. You can make any appliqués on the potholders without finishing the edge. Moreover, even a sewing machine is optional! Felt perfectly holds its shape, even hand-sewn.
We do not give you any patterns here, because there is no point here: it is easier to draw the details ourselves, making any size you want. Here is an example of an Autumn Leaf potholder.
You need to sew with contrasting, woolen threads, you can use beads, braid, etc.
Crochet potholders
For those who like to knit, we offer a lot of interesting crocheted oven mitts for the kitchen. The process of creating them won’t even take an evening! A couple of hours and you’re done. Of course, if we are talking about the simplest options.
It would be nice if you attached the knitted part to the fabric, purl, and put a synthetic winterizer inside. Otherwise, such potholders serve only as an interior decoration and you cannot take a hot frying pan with them.
Let’s see what the most popular options are.
Tack “Simple square”
You don’t even need any schemes here.
Just make a chain of the desired size and build up rows on it, changing thread colors, depending on the selected pattern. And then tie the finished square with any curly row.
Motley potholder “Ring”
And there is no need for schemes. Make a small chain of 5-6 links, connect it together and start knitting in a circle, changing the threads.
As you can see, everything is very elementary, but what a result!
Potholder “Watermelon slices”
And there is no need for schemes! Knit a circle, changing the threads on the crust, and then just fold it in half, connect it along the edge with a border row and embroider the seeds with black threads.
This tack comes out tighter than the previous ones, since it is double.
Potholder “Ladybug”
Believe it or not, we can do without schemes even here! We knit a circle, and then we tie the head to it, removing the loops by eye, so that the same shape comes out as in the picture.
In the same way, by eye, we knit circles and a tail.
Potholder “Sunflower”
And here we need a scheme. The potholder comes out very beautiful, but it is beyond the power of a beginner.
But, if you do not understand such complex patterns, and you really want a sunflower, then you can knit it according to the second option. He’s not so smart to look at, but still a sunflower!
You just need to knit it round, changing the colors of the threads in the picture. So as not to get confused, first draw a circle on a piece of paper in a cage and paint over the necessary elements, so it will be easier for you to count later.
Crocheted pot holder “Cockerel”
One of the more popular options that is relatively easy to make and looks really cool. Here is one example along with a pattern.
Experienced knitters will not find it difficult to knit this “feathered miracle”. You can use a wide variety of colors, up to bright and variegated.
Hot coasters made of various materials
Well, for a snack, we suggest you make coasters for hot cups. If they are made to match the potholders, then a whole ensemble will come out!
The apples shown in the picture below are knitted like a regular circle. And we attach the diagram of the leaf.
We knit a leaf according to the scheme, and we make a “tail” from a pair of lines of simple loops, interconnected.
