Lewisia belongs to the Portulacaceae family and is a flowering herbaceous plant. It is a flowering herbaceous plant that can be grown both in pots and in rock gardens. Lewisia is a succulent plant with numerous rosettes of fleshy, glossy, dark green, evergreen leaves with wavy edges. During the flowering period, long, cylindrical, reddish stems spring from the base of these rosettes and bear beautiful flowers in clusters. These flowers have a corolla made up of large, flat petals in hues ranging from white to pink to salmon.

The Lewisia generally lives in mountainous environments and therefore likes to stay in cool, sunny places, not indoors for too long, but outdoors. If it is too hot outside, this plant goes into a resting state and starts flowering again when the weather turns cooler. Lewisia should always be repotted after purchase, and the new container should be one or two sizes larger than the original container. A layer of clay balls should be placed at the bottom of the pot to avoid waterlogging. The soil should be kept moist by regular watering. Fertilize the Lewisia every 12 to 15 days between spring and summer, using sticks or drops of fertilizer. Here’s how to grow Lewisia, this magnificent succulent plant with very special flowers.
Flowering and varieties of Lewisia
When in a protected environment Lewisia blooms as early as March, when outdoors it blooms from May. Many different species, both common and rare, belong to this genus of plants.

Lewisia has beautiful daisy-like flowers, small leaves and low stems. For this reason, it can also be grown in pots. The most common variety of this plant has pink flowers with a white edge, but there are also red and orange flowers with a yellow edge. The most prestigious variety is White Splendor. The Lewisia is native to the Rocky Mountains and northern California and therefore likes cool places in the mountains. It also grows in rock gardens and does not fear direct sunlight, as long as the climate is not arid. The plant needs a good thermal amplitude at night and during the hot months it rests and stops flowering.
Lewisia does not tolerate waterlogging and grows well in stony soils, where rain leaves the soil moist but then dries up quickly. Watering should be regular, moistening the soil without ever making it soggy. If it is in a pot, a layer of expanded clay should always be placed at the bottom of the pot. This plant can only be grown outdoors, never indoors. In addition, it does not live long: it usually stops flowering after a few years.
